Rocket Math Homework Directions:
We completed our first Rocket Math practice today. The kids were super excited to get started. Tonight we are sending home the homework. The homework is strictly ORAL. Please do not have your child write anything on the paper! Here is how to interpret what you are viewing:
Completely blank paper stapled to a paper that has been answered: Your child passed the level and has moved on to the next level.
or
Paper with answers inside the large square: Your child did not meet the goal, and will retake the same test tomorrow.
The goal is different for each child, and the goal is a formula based on a pre test they took combined with their personal writing speed. (It would be unrealistic for your child to do 50 problems in a minute if they can only write 23 numbers in a minute). You will see your child's goal written in the box labeled 'goal'. Your child is given ONE MINUTE to complete the answers inside the box, and the expectation is to not skip problems. It is highly unlikely you will ever see a child with the whole box finished.
HOMEWORK:
1. Your child sits with the sheet in front of them. The problems to practice are the ones that go in a circle on the OUTSIDE of the page and should not have any answers written under them.
2.They read each fact (2+3=5) not just the answer. If there is a hesitation or error on a fact, give your child the answer, then have them repeat the whole problem back to you 3x.
3. If an error occurs: Have your child back up 3 problems and begin again.
4. Go once around the outside of the page. It should only take about 5 minutes, and does not require any writing. Do not have them do any writing or problems on the inside of the square, and do not have them write in the answers on the outside of the square- we are simply wanting to build automaticity. If you wish to do it again, wait at least an hour so it does not become a cumbersome experience for them :) (We don't want tears!)
