Week 4

It is hard to believe this week we will have completed a month of second grade learning!  Last week as we reviewed the summer season we did a little experiment on UV rays: the purpose of UV rays, and why we have to protect our skin from too much sunlight!  Here are a few snapshots of our experiment.  We used UV color changing beads, the baggies were our "skin" and we tried out different sunscreen levels on the baggies.  We observed what happened to the different UV beads depending on the level of sunscreen.  I think it was a fun first experiment for the class!

This week we will be learning the following:

Literature:  Boxcar Children
(I have ordered the first 12 books in the series- our students always LOVE the Boxcar adventures after finishing the story, I hope having more of the series in the classroom will encourage reading great literature! Look for details about our Boxcar Reading Train when we get closer to finishing the book.)
Spalding:  30 words
Grammar:  Linking and being Verbs
Writing: Introduction and practice of writing good summaries
Math:  Addition and Subtraction- 3 digit numbers, word problems
Science:  The Water Cycle (check back here later this week for our class performing the water cycle song- it is a great review of vocabulary!)
History:  Geography of the Americas:  Assessment on Friday. Ancient India will begin when we return to school after Labor Day.

Reminder:  Next Monday, September 5th is Labor Day.  It will be a school holiday, and it will be a R&R weekend (rest and recovery weekend= no homework!)

We are collecting Highlights, Time for Kids, Scholastic Weekly Readers, anything you might subscribe to that offers varied non-fiction articles at a second grade level to keep in our classroom to help boost our nonfiction texts in the classroom.

Have a wonderful week!
