Quarter 2, Week 4

We have a lot on the horizon, and new areas of study are kicking off tomorrow!

History:  On the continent of Asia we have studied India and China, and now we are taking a look at Japan: an archipelago, or chain of islands, that makes this magnificent place!  This will be a shorter unit of study, and will culminate in about 10 days with a small quiz.

Science:  SIMPLE MACHINES!  We are so excited to begin our hands on learning of simple machines!  This unit will become our focus for Project Week.  In the weeks to come you will be receiving information about a home-based project that will incorporate your child's learning of simple machines.  (For parents who had 2nd graders last year: we traded out the insect project with the simple machine project for Project Week.  Insect project will be completed in the Spring!)  Project week is the first week in January directly following Winter Break.

Literature:  We will be reading Cricket in Times Square this week and continuing to work on editing/final draft stage of our informational paragraphs.  The students are putting a lot of work and detail into writing.  It is a joy to watch budding authors in the classroom!

Math:  Concepts of Multiplication:  assessment for Hadley and Schoonover:  Monday
assessment for Stecker's math class:  Tuesday

All classes will use the rest of the week mastering the concepts of division: (repeated subtraction, using arrays to divide, number bonds, sharing vs. grouping)

A look beyond the classroom:

This Friday, no school in observance of Veteran's Day.  Thank you to all military past and present for your service.

Fall Concert:  November 17th
We are collecting canned cranberries for the Thanksgiving Food Drive!  You may bring them in at your convenience.  We will have a special "eat in the room day" for any student who brings in at least 2 cans :) Shhh....it's a secret!  (Tuesday, November 15th will be our eat in the room day!)

A Note From the Music Teachers: Concert Attendance

Attendance at the upcoming Music Concert is MANDATORY. Please remember that students are expected to stay for the entire concert performance. Students' Participation grades for the semester are pending upon them staying for the entire performance. Teachers will not sign a student out until the very end of the concert. If a student is signed out early from the concert, they will receive a deduction in their Participation grade in Muisc for the semester.
